Kindergarten Crew News

We are Learning:

Language Arts:

  • High Frequency words: are, will, with

  • Decodable: Josh's New Home

  • Rhyming: We did an interactive writing piece called The Day the Vowels Went Away

  • Isolating sounds in CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words - beginning, middle and ending and writing the letters that represent those sounds.

  • Writing our first and last names with a capital at the beginning and the rest lowercase

  • Writing sentences: starting with a capital letter and ending with punctuation. We are working on putting spaces between our words and breaking down our words into sounds so we can write the letters to spell words.

Math:

  • Module 4 - Number Pairs, Addition and Subtraction to 10.

  • Add or subtract 0 to get the same number and relate to
word problems wherein the same quantity that joins a set,
    separates.

  • Add 1 to numbers 1–9 to see the pattern of the next
number using 5-group drawings and equations.

  • Find the number that makes 10 for numbers 1–9, and
record each with a 5-group drawing.

Expedition: Around the World

  • We have been studying our expert culture BRAZIL and their 6 elements of culture: Language, Clothing, Traditions, Daily Life, The Arts (music, dance, art, etc.), and Food. This week we learned some words in Portuguese and discussed some of the landmarks and geography of Brazil such as the Amazon Rainforest and Amazon River.

  • We had an expert speaker talk to us about Russia - Thank you Mr. Greenhalgh for sharing your knowledge with us! We have another expert coming next week! We are so excited to discover what other people and their customs are like.

Take Note:

Are you reading every day?

Our students are working so hard on their letter names and sounds as well as blending those sounds together into words. One way we can continue to support this skill is by reading 15 minutes every night. This includes:

  • Doing the daily section of our homework

  • Letter/sound flashcards

  • Practicing high frequency words or blending non-sense words

  • Reading phonics books.

You can access our reading program online for a small subscription fee. Currently, you can get the first 3 months free with code 30FREE. They have amazing books for our students to read online or you can purchase the actual books to read at home. Please go to iseesam.com and click on "Digital Subscription Edition". I recommend starting at Set 1. If that seems too easy for your student, I am happy to do a placement assessment to see where they should get started - just send me an email. I also have a few copies in my classroom you can borrow on an as needed basis. Thanks!

Looking Ahead:

May 7 - Celebration of Learning

Kindergarten's Celebration will begin at 5:00 in the auditorium. All students should come at 4:50 wearing  uniform pants, shorts, or skirt and a solid, brightly colored shirt (hot pink, neon green, yellow, red, bright blue, etc.). If your student has a brightly colored dress, they may wear that. They should wear shoes they can easily dance in (no slip on). Your student is making the other part of their costume that we will put on when they get here.

May 31 - 1-12 Grades Last Day

No School for Kindergarten. Last day for the rest of the school which is dismissed at 11:15 am.

Have a FANTASTIC and safe summer!

It has been a pleasure and privilege to teach your students. I can't wait to see them in the fall as big kids in first grade!

One thing that can happen as we take a long break from practicing skills everyday, is the "summer slide." Students who have been working so hard all school year to read, add, subtract, write, etc. suddenly can't do what they could before when they start back up in the fall.

To help prevent this, I have a summer packet that you can print off or request me to print (just message me before May 22nd). **Students who bring me their completed packet at Back-to-School Night on August 12th will get a special prize!**
