Curriculum

Specials

Programs:

  • Physical Education

  • Computer Lab

  • Music

  • Art

*WE WILL NOT BE ATTENDING SPECIALS UNTIL AFTER WINTER BREAK*

Kindergarten students will attend specials on Tuesdays and ThursdayS. We will try to incorporate the arts, technology and physical education into our other subjects as well.

Students will have an opportunity to go to computer lab, art, PE and music twice a week (rotating schedule).  Also, Wednesdays are wonderful around here for one good reason, free play! We will have free art, writing stations, dramatic play and math games to reinforce learning targets from the week.

Language Arts

Programs:

  • EL Reading FoundationsSkills Block

  • Heggerty Phonemic Awareness

K-2 uses EL Reading Foundations Skills Block to teach strong phonemic and phonic instruction. Our reading curriculum uses many tools. Students will be learning all new skills and practicing them during literacy center time. We will also follow a "close" reading structure, where we read as a class for specific purposes and journal about passages or stories. We will read a few chapter books as read alouds in class. I am a big believer in small group instruction, so much of the reading and writing instruction will happen during station time with peers of similar reading level as well as one-on-one time with me or a literacy aide.

Math

Programs:

  • Engage NY/Eureka Math

Engage NY or Eureka Math was developed in order to assist educators with the implementation of the Common Core. The New York State Education Department provides curricular modules for Pre-K-  Grade 12 English Language Arts and Mathematics. The program emphasizes the creation, manipulation, and relationship of numerical units. It relies on meaningful assessment designed to identify misconceptions and misunderstandings by promoting self-monitoring and self-assessment. The lesson structure is designed for fast-paced practice and encourages persistence.

Expedition

  • Fall 2023:  Little Hands on the Farm

  • Spring 2024: Around the World

For those of you new to EL...

Teaching EL (formerly known as Expeditionary Learning) fosters curiosity about the world by creating learning situations that provide important topics to think about, time to experiment, and time to make sense of what is observed. It emphasizes high achievement through revision, active learning, character growth and teamwork. Expeditions typically last the majority of a semester so we have two expeditions a year - a science centered one and a social science centered one. Of course we integrate other subjects into our expeditions including art, music, PE, technology, etc. as well as strive to include a service aspect. At the end of the expedition, we have a Celebration of Learning where we showcase our learning to our families.

Our two expeditions this year will begin with We the People (Citizenship/Social Science) and finish with The Pond (Science).

Also, after each expedition we have what is called an "intensive." It is a mini expedition that lasts for 2 weeks. This year's intensives are Maps (Earth Science) Winter Holidays Around the World (Social Science) and I am a Scientist! (Scientific method/Physical Science).
