ATTENDANCE
Students will be allowed to enter the school 10 min. prior to class start time. Please let me know if your student will be absent so I can excuse it on PowerSchool. If you know your student will be gone ahead of time, please let me know ASAP. Please check PowerSchool frequently for any unexcused absences or tardies.
"Important work and learning happens every day at Venture Academy; consequently, regular attendance is expected and required for students to fully benefit from the educational opportunities offered. Missing class should be minimal because absences affect, not only the missing student, but the effectiveness of the teacher and the learning of other students. Parents bear the responsibility to ensure students are on time and in attendance." - Dr.Child, pg.1 of VA Attendance Policy

HOMEWORK
Grades can be checked at any time on
Homework: Your student will bring home 1 literacy sheet every Monday. The sheet is set up to be done each day during the week (4 days total). This sheet does NOT have to be returned to school, but if you have completed it and want to bring it back for a sticker; you are welcome to. If you are particularly proud of a section you worked hard on, feel free to send a video of yourself doing a section of the homework on Remind. Feel free to help your student, however, remember this is for them to learn and practice skills. It will make subsequent assignments more difficult if they haven't mastered the previous skills independently.
Please read 15 minutes a day. This can include you reading to your student, your student reading or retelling a favorite story to you, practicing letters and sounds, high frequency words, etc. Some great beginning readers can be found here. If you are not sure which set to start with, email me and I would be happy to assess your student and let you know where to start.
Occasionally there will be expedition related assignments, but very little - mostly to help with research and projects we are completing at school.
**Why is homework a big deal? We're only in Kindergarten!
These skills are very important for your student to practice. It is important for students to get in the habit of taking folders/assignments home and completing them. They will be responsible for so much more next school year so let's prepare them for success now!

BIRTHDAYS
We will be celebrating birthdays and half-birthdays (for the summer kiddos) this year! When it is your child's birthday you may bring in treats for the class as long as it is a store bought item. Non-food items are encouraged to help accommodate those with food allergies. Some ideas include: bubbles, stickers, playdough, bouncy balls, crazy straws, etc. We have 25 students in our class. Treats will be passed out at the end of class as we are leaving.
With regards to birthday parties, I ask that you do not send out invitations at school unless the whole class is invited as we don't want anyone feeling left out.

Work Folders
Work folders will be sent home every Monday and must be returned the following Monday. If school is not in session on Monday, it will be due/sent the following school day. Inside each folder will be 3 pockets: one for attention items (papers to be signed or time sensitive material), one for language arts homework and one for items to be kept at home. You only get one folder for the whole school year so take good care of it!
*Students in quarantine or isolation may request printed class work packets. Please contact me to arrange pick up.
